The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports 12,892 new infections on its website. This is an increase from 10,976 new cases the previous day. The number of deaths has also increased from 348 to 852.
This means that more than 1.66 million people in Germany have now contracted the coronavirus, and 30,978 have died in connection with it. The seven-day incidence drops to 149.2 from 157.8 the previous day. The figure indicates how many people per 100,000 population tested positive within seven days.
The RKI points out that during the holidays and at the turn of the year, fewer tests and laboratory examinations as well as fewer transmissions of test results by the public health offices are to be expected.
